What it is
Liposuction removes fat through small incisions using a thin tube. It changes shape in specific areas such as the flanks, abdomen, thighs or under the chin. Skin needs to be elastic enough to settle over the new contour, which the surgeon checks at the consult.
General anaesthesia or sedation. Done in an accredited surgical facility.
It may suit you if
- Areas of fat that have not changed with diet and exercise
- Firm skin with good elasticity
- You are within about 30 percent of your goal weight
- You want shape, not a number on the scale
It is not for
- General weight loss
- Loose skin, which liposuction can make more noticeable
Recovery, week by week
- Days 1 to 3Soreness like a hard workout, compression garment, light walking.
- Week 1Back to desk work for most people.
- Weeks 2 to 6Bruising fades. Garment worn as advised.
- Months 3 to 6Swelling settles and the shape becomes clear.
Typical timelines. Your surgeon writes your own plan and gives it to you at consult.
Risks to know about
Every operation carries risk. These are discussed in full, with how often they happen in the surgeon's own practice, at your consult:
- Contour irregularities or dents
- Numbness or skin changes
- Fluid collection
- Blood clots
- Risks of anaesthesia

Your questions
How much can be removed?
There is a safe limit for one session, which depends on your health and the areas treated. The surgeon explains it for your case.
Will the fat come back?
Removed fat cells do not return, but the fat you keep can still grow with weight gain.
Is it the same as a tummy tuck?
No. Liposuction removes fat. A tummy tuck removes skin and repairs muscle. Some people need both.
