What it is

Breast augmentation places a silicone or saline implant behind the breast tissue or behind the chest muscle. The size and shape are chosen from measurements of your chest and the tissue you already have, then tried with sizers at the consult. The incision is usually in the fold under the breast.

General anaesthesia. Done in an accredited surgical facility.

It may suit you if

  • Breasts that have always felt small for your frame
  • Volume lost after pregnancy or weight change
  • Uneven sizes you want closer together
  • You are in good health and not pregnant or breastfeeding

It is not for

  • Significant sagging on its own (a lift, or a lift with an implant, may suit better)
  • A size chosen to please someone else

Recovery, week by week

  1. Days 1 to 3Tightness across the chest, rest at home, a support bra day and night.
  2. Week 1Most people are back at desk work by the end of the week.
  3. Weeks 2 to 4No lifting over about 10 pounds and no upper-body workouts.
  4. Weeks 6 to 8Exercise returns in stages. Implants settle into place.
  5. OngoingRegular checks. Implants are not lifetime devices, and your surgeon explains imaging for silicone.

Typical timelines. Your surgeon writes your own plan and gives it to you at consult.

Risks to know about

Every operation carries risk. These are discussed in full, with how often they happen in the surgeon's own practice, at your consult:

  • Capsular contracture (scar tissue tightening around the implant)
  • Implant rupture or the need for replacement over time
  • Changes in nipple sensation
  • Breast implant illness and BIA-ALCL, discussed in full at consult
  • Risks of anaesthesia

Your questions

How do I choose a size?

From your chest measurements, then by trying sizers in a bra at the consult. Bring a fitted top you like. The aim is a size that looks like it belongs on you.

Silicone or saline?

Both are FDA-approved. They feel and behave differently, and the surgeon goes through the trade-offs for your tissue.

Can I breastfeed later?

Many people can, but it cannot be promised. Tell the surgeon if it matters to you, because it can change the incision and placement.

Talk augmentation through with the surgeon.
